Technical Services

In previous years, this Division was split into two separate Divisions: Support Services and Communications. Reorganization combined these two divisions into one, under the supervision of the Technical Services Commander. Included in this division is the heart of the Department’s communication: oral, written and technological. This Division is largely comprised of civilian personnel, and includes 911 as well as Management Information Services and the Records Unit.

The 911 Unit not only manages emergency calls, but also non-emergency calls for anyone in the City of Joliet. Dispatchers are responsible for sending officers to requests for assistance, as well as ensuring that officers have the proper backup.

Support Services is charged with managing all reports generated within the Department. This includes reports written by officers, as well as those taken by individuals that arrive in person at the Department. In addition, they provide thousands of persons that call the Department with information on a variety of different subjects.

The Management Information Services Unit oversees the technological advancement of all other Divisions within the Department. Beyond managing the Department network, staff also provide in-car computers for over one hundred officers, and spend a significant amount of time working on computerizing Units and Divisions that previously had little or no computer involvement, such as the Investigations Division.
